An amusement park mogul offers a random group of diverse people $1 million to spend the night in a decrepit former mental institution. They have faked Evelyn's death, plotting to frame Price for the murders, hoping one of the guests will kill him in self-defense. Evelyn heartlessly kills Blackburn, adding another victim, then releases a delirious Price from the chamber. Sara finds Price, covered in blood and with Blackburn's severed head nearby, and shoots him. Eddie and Pritchett arrive and bring Sara upstairs, after which Evelyn approaches Price to gloat.

Pictures supplied promotional scratchcards to cinemas showing the film, offering ticket buyers a chance to win a money prize, similar to the movie's characters. However, Sara and Eddie (with the help of Pritchett's ghost) were able to escape through the attic window (which Price was able to reopen before he was absorbed) onto the building's roof before The Darkness could assimilate them. The Vannacutt Psychiatric Institute for the Criminally Insane, also known as the House on Haunted Hill, is a now-abandoned building located on a cliffside on the coast of Los Angeles, California. As they are running up the stairs to the attic, Sara trips, and the Darkness uses Melissa's form to try, without success, to lure her to it. Price by then has activated a pulley that reveals an opening in the window of the attic. Eddie and Sara arrive in the attic, while the Darkness seeps up the cracks of the wooden floor. Price sacrifices himself to give Sara time to escape, but when Sara escapes out through the window onto the building's roof, the Darkness then severs the rope holding the iron gate, trapping Eddie inside. The Darkness reveals that the souls that comprise it want to feed on all those "who are responsible".

The old asylum's staff used the pool to perform hydrotherapy on patients, but the patients usually drowned in the pool. This room is an isolated, inescapable room where, during Vannacutt's reign of terror, patients would be put in the room alone in the dark, most likely to starve to death. There is no way in or out of the room (except for smashing through the wall), as patients were put inside by building the room's fourth wall in front of them. This room is an isolated, decayed, almost empty room, which can be accessed through an old, decaying door.
With the Idol and its power gone from the building, the ghosts were freed from Baphomet's will and crossed over, and the facility came unsealed. The Institute was built by the grandfather of Watson Pritchett, and was run by Dr. Richard B. Vannacutt. At some point, when Dr. Vannacutt discovered the Baphomet Idol and was corrupted by its evil, he hid the Idol in the heart of the house; a chamber the entrance to which was hidden at the back of one of the furnaces in the asylum's crematorium.
